The investigation is continuing into the killing of four birds at the David Traylor Zoo of Emporia the weekend of June 21, and several individuals have come forward asking to help with reward money to catch the people who killed the birds.
A pair of black swans and a pair of cereopsis geese were killed the evening before the zoo’s annual open house. The black swans were three and 21 years old and the geese were 14 and 11 years old.
Emporia Deputy Police Chief Mike Williams said the police department has received a number of inquiries about funding a reward to help catch the people involved. Lisa Keith, interim zoo director, said she’s received a number of calls as well.
There are two avenues to donate, Keith said. The zoo needs money to replace the birds and for a security system. Anyone wishing to donate money for this should make a check out to the Emporia Friends of the Zoo, P.O. Box 345, Emporia, KS 66801. In the memo line write “zoo birds” or “zoo security system.”
People wishing to donate to a reward fund for information leading to the capture and conviction of the people responsible for killing the birds should make a check out to Crime Stoppers, P.O. Box 2205, Emporia, KS 66801.
People with information on the incident are asked to call police at 343-4200. Information may be left anonymously by calling Lyon County Crime Stoppers, 342-2273.

An important factor in catching who ever did the dam deed of killing innocent tame birds is one thing. The important factor to bear in mind is that nothing ever happens to the offender when he or she is caught. OH YOU NAUGHTY PEOPLE. and thats where it in most cases stops. SOOO WHY IS THERE SO MUCH CRIME, SPRAY PAINTING ETC, NO PUNISHMENT. RIGHT ON.

Let's show the thugs who did this that Emporia CARES about its zoo. We can all help by writing a check for the replacement, the security system (which I'm told is pricey), and/or a reward fund. When the jerk(s) are caught and convicted, throw the book at them, and then some. Life is tough enough without having to deal with small-minded, evil people.

Massacre? Seriously?! It's a terrible thing what happened to those birds, but to call it a massacre is extremely over the top. What happened at Columbine was a massacre. What happened on 9/11 was a massacre. Four birds that were killed at the Emporia zoo, no matter how inhumanely, does not qualify as a massacre. Talk about being overdramatic.

Thanks for this information, Brandy, I've been waiting for this. I firmly believe that a reward, hopefully a sizable one, will flush out the criminal. There's always a snitch who could use a few bucks.

To Whom It May Concern,
Setting up a security system is a no brainer, and it does not have to be expense. Assuming you have experience setting up different types of security systems in different ways over the last 18 years in the very toughest neighborhoods you can't even imagine.
Now days its getting easier all the time.
I would set it up for you on the fly using my families treasure but I am not needed for anything here in Emporia.
As my father always used to say to me "Think ahead!". You failed to think ahead!
However, usually when I think ahead, especially here, "Suddenly I'm Dangerous" or I'm a nuisance.
My guess is that if I just donate the money you will waste it and Emporia will still not need me for anything.
I will not donate a penny of my families treasure or my time to people who think I'm a joke.
You know who you are.
Yours very sincerely and respectfully,

I really think this is sad...I have been going to that zoo since i was a baby and one of those black swans was 21, the same age as me...I find it horrible that people these days have no respect for anything or anybody...Why would you kill an innocent animal...somebody needs to put a stop to the kind of behavior that is going on in this town...I have lived in Emporia my whole life, I am young, I know the bad stuff that is going on...drugs rule that town and so do hoodlums...this needs to stop
