Brown Bag

The Wednesday noon Brown Bag concert at the Emporia Public Library, 110 E. Sixth Ave., features “Sock Hop Smiles” with Dennis Porter and Happy Faces Entertainment. Children who are present at 11 a.m. can create an art project with the Emporia Arts Council. Pizza and beverages will be sold by Wheat State Pizza. Participants are to bring lawn chairs as seating is limited. In case of inclement weather, events will be held inside the library.

Concert and movie

The Live in the Lot concerts and movies, sponsored by Flint Hills Music, are held Wednesdays in the parking lot at Seventh Avenue and Merchant St. Featured this Wednesday will be Black Tuxedo, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The movie, which begins at 8:30 p.m., will be “Yours, Mine and Ours.” In case of rain, the music will be played at the JavaCat 5 coffee house, 610 Merchant St.

Young Thespians

The Young Thespian Players will perform “Blather, Blarney and Balderdash” in the Black Box Theatre at the Emporia Arts Center on July 10, 11 and 12. The July 10 and 11 shows will each begin at 7:30 p.m., while the 12th will feature two shows, one at 2 p.m. and one at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will go on sale an hour before each show at the arts center.

Worm Races

The Emporia Public Library will have the annual Worm Races and Activities, beginning at 10 a.m. July 11. Bring worms.

Kid’s College

Kid’s College at the Flint Hills Technical College will be offered Monday through July 11 and from July 14 through 18. This is a week-long, half-day activity for children who have completed fourth, fifth or sixth grade. Children will have the opportunity to explore a variety of careers with lots of fun, hands-on activities, said the news release. Each session is limited to 20 children. The cost is $75 each student per five-day session. Times for session are 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m. For more information or reservations, call FHTC at 343-4600.

Art classes continue at the Emporia Arts Council, 618 Mechanic St., with those for ages 2-5 including Creative Movement from 6 to 6:45 p.m. today through Sunday, $17; Clay Time from 10 to 11 a.m. July 15, $20; Yarn, Buttons and Beads Oh My from 10 to 11 a.m. July 17, $15; and Messy Me Art from 11 to 11:45 a.m. July 22-24, $16.

Classes for children 6-11 are Mono Prints from 4 to 6 p.m. Mondays, July 7-28, $40; Passport to the Arts from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday, $30; Beginners Wheel Throwing from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Tuesday through July 24, $85 and July 29-Aug. 7, $65; Tuesday through July 17, $60 and July 22-31, $60; Seasons of Art from 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday through July 10, $22; Mixed Media from 4 to 6 p.m. July 15 or July 22, each session is $28; Dads, Doughnuts and Tie Dye from 9 to 10:30 a.m. July 19, $30 fee covers one child and one adult.

Classes for ages 12-16 include Ceramics Handbuilding Level 2 from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays and Fridays through July 11, $60, July 16-25, $60 and July 30-Aug. 8, $60; Linoleum Prints from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through July 30, $40; Wheel-Throwing Techniques from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Tuesday through July 24, $85 and July 29-Aug. 7, $65; Beginners Wheel-Throwing from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays July 16-Aug. 1, $85; Mono Prints from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday through July 28, $40; Jazz and Hip-Hop Dance from 6 to 6:45 p.m. Tuesday through July 11, $25; Mixed Media from 4 to 6 p.m. July 15 (session 1), July 22 (session 2), each session, $28; Dads, Doughnuts and Tie Dye from 9 to 10:30 a.m. July 19, $30; Go Green with Recycle Art from 10 to 11:30 a.m. July 23-25, $22.

Classes for 17 to adult are Linoleum Prints from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through July 30, $40; and Jazz and Hip-Hop Dance from 6 to 6:45 p.m. July 15-18, $25.

Pre-registration is important because classes must have a minimum number to meet. To register, call 343-6473 or stop by the center at 618 Mechanic St.
