New ministers

Area United Methodist Churches will have new pastors beginning their ministry on Sunday, as announced by United Methodist Bishop Scott J. Jones in a news release. Churches in this area and their pastors are Americus United Methodist Church, Regine Gile; First UMC in Emporia, Matthew Powell, associate pastor; Lebo-Olivet UMC, Tony Hazen; Neosho Rapids-Hartford UMC, Clarence Lautt and Zona Lautt; Madison-Ebenezer UMC, Laura Burnett; Reading UMC, Margaret Gunselman.

Study of religions

“Christianity and World Religions: Wrestling with Questions People Ask,” covering the world’s major religions, will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesdays in July and Aug. 6 and 13 at the Admire United Methodist Church. This is a six week study course by Adam Hamilton, pastor of the Church of the Resurrection UMC in Leawood, which will cover Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Christianity. There will be videotapes, handout information sheets and a time for discussion. All are invited.

Vacation Bible Schools

A bilingual Vacation Bible School will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Las Casitas Park, Monday through Thursday. “Choose Life! Choose Jesus!” is for kids 4 years old and up, with lots of games, music, crafts and fun. Thursday evening is for the whole family. There is no cost. The event is sponsored by six area churches. Faith Lutheran Church, 1348 Trail Ridge Road, will have Vacation Bible School, “Friendship Trek,” for children three years through sixth grade from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. For information or to register, call 342-3590.

The First Church of the Nazarene, 2931 W. 24th Ave., will have Vacation Bible School, “Custom Garage,” from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Dinner is served each evening at 5:15 p.m. at a cost of $3.50 for adults and $1.50 for children. Highlights of VBS will be given on July 13, along with lunch. To pre-register, call 342-2858.

The Admire-Allen Vacation Bible School will be held for children from 4 through 12 years from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Lebo Baptist Church will have Vacation Bible School from Monday through Friday. For more information, call (620) 256-6416 or (620) 256-6398.

Registration is now being taken for Totus Tuus for grades 1 through 8 and high school students to be held July 28-August 1 at the Didde Catholic Campus Center. The cost is $15 each person. Registration forms are available at the office but need to be returned soon to the center.

Americus Southern Baptist Church meets for worship at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, after Sunday school for all ages at 9:30 a.m. Nursery care is available for the morning service. Bible study begins at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Americus United Methodist Church begins Sunday worship at 8 a.m., followed by Sunday school for all ages beginning at 9:30 a.m. Worship with children’s church for those 5 and younger is held at 10:30 a.m. Child care is available, along with breakfast. Today members will welcome the new minister of the Americus church, the Rev. Regine “Gina” Gile. The Rev. Bud Tuxhorn is now a minister at the Worden UMC in Baldwin City.
