MADISON — A new restaurant has opened in downtown Madison, the second new business downtown in the past year.

John and JoAnn Toombes have retired from the fast-paced life of Las Vegas and moved to Madison, where they say they are living out their dream of owning a small-town restaurant, The Madison Main Street Café.

Madison’s new restaurant has been under construction for several months and opened the Thursday before Madison Days. According to JoAnn Toombes, the first week was a success and customers have given good reviews on the food and the service.

The restaurant is open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch. The bar in the back is also open seven days a week.

The menu is limited, but expanded last week with four new items and will expand further in the future, according to JoAnn Toombes.

John Toombes has family in Madison. He said he and his wife made the decision about two years ago to move to Madison after years of working in the casino business in Las Vegas. John Toombes is a private fire and life safety system consultant in the casino industry and JoAnn Toombes worked for many years handling millions of dollars in the casino cages, exchanging chips for cash.

John Toombes said he is currently fulfilling a contract with one of the world’s largest casinos, The Venetian in Macau, China. He still travels to Macau periodically to inspect and report on the fire and safety systems of the building project.
