Sharon Zeller kept telling herself that it was just an exhibition race. That Saturday’s Shrine Bowl 5K at Welch Stadium was all for fun.

It didn’t matter. Her competitive nature -— and desire to win — still came out as she sprinted the final homestretch, trying desperately to catch the runners ahead of her.

“I couldn’t help it,” the Olpe High graduate said. “You can’t help it.”

Zeller’s seventh-place finish helped her team to a victory, as the East girls and West boys were the winners at the inaugural Shrine Bowl 5K.

Part of Zeller’s success Saturday came from her decision to run next to Marissa Quillen.

Zeller, who’d only run one 5K before Saturday, said her goal was to stick with Quillen the whole time.

“I couldn’t slow down,” Zeller said, “because she wasn’t slowing down.”

Though Zeller hadn’t been doing any speed work in preparation for the race, she still ended with a time of 20:04. She will attend Wichita State in the fall to run cross country.

The area’s four male competitors were led by Emporia High’s Asher Delmott, as he completed the race in 16:04 to take fourth.

Delmott, who earned two All-American honors earlier in the week, was the best finisher on the East boys squad.

He ran the first mile in 5:02 and had a two-mile split of 10:07 on the hilly course. He averaged 5:08 per mile during the Junior Olympics earlier in the week — and that was on a flat surface.

“I knew I was going for a good time,” Delmott said. “My training sure has helped out, but this week, it might have hurt me a little bit because I was tired.”

Asher’s brother Skyler, who runs for the Emporia State cross country team, won the men’s open division with a time of 15:22.

Tyler Anliker had the next-best area finish behind Asher, taking 11th with a time of 16:58.

He was able to edge out the West’s Andrew Wagner in the final 50 meters.

“We had been going back and forth for a long time,” Anliker said. “I was like, ‘I’ve gotta get him.’”

EHS’s Andrew Wayman placed 15th with a time of 17:56, while Northern Heights’ Pete Symmonds was 20th with a 19:48.

Jacob Davies and Michaela Reynolds — both of Emporia High — did not compete because of knee injuries.

Emporia’s Jenna Stanbrough won the women’s open race with a time of 19:42. Other Emporians in the top three were Carissa Marshall in the open girls race (second, 19:45) and Mauricio Morales in the open boys race (third, 15:43).

The All-Star cross country runners first arrived in Emporia on Friday. After listening to a motivational speech, they gathered for a pasta dinner before spending the night in the dorms.

“ I think it’s just been a very neat experience for the athletes,“ EHS coach and event organizer Mark Stanbrough said. “That was kind of the whole purpose — to make it a prestigious event.”
