READING — Reading State Bank is now Tightwad Bank.
According to a press release, Reading State Bank purchased a branch bank in Tightwad, a town of 63 in west-central Missouri. The purchase was approved in March as well as changing the name for both locations to Tightwad Bank. There will be no staff changes at the Reading bank as a result of this acquisition.
“Not just limited to local residents, ‘tightwads’ around the nation will be able to open checking and debit-card accounts bearing the Tightwad Bank identity,” the press release stated. “Today’s Internet technology will be utilized in offering basic deposit and loans products nationally.”
The bank’s web site will be www.tightwadbank.net and Web site and online banking services are being developed.
“We like to think of the term ‘tightwad’ as meaning frugal and old-fashioned banking,” said Bank President Cynthia Koch. “With the state of the current economy and rising in fuel prices, it seems that ‘tightening up’ is on the minds of everyone these days.”
Chairman and CEO Don Higdon said Tightwad Bank’s core values will continue to revolve around banking on a personal level.
“Our small-town location means that we can offer low fees, competitive rates and personal contact,” Higdon said.
The former bank in Tightwad was a branch of UMB Bank that closed in January 2007. The original Tightwad Bank was founded in 1984 and was picked up by newspapers throughout the United States and Canada.

Reading Bank may want to look into buying the Bank of Gas, too. It's located in Gas, KS just east of Iola. It's a great place to make deposits but withdrawals are not recommended.
