READING — The community of Reading’s ball field received a makeover with a new concession stand, new picnic tables and sewer lines — and it was all donated.
Westar Energy, along with Black and Veatch Construction, donated the materials and labor to remodel the Reading Ball Field, said Linda Lea of the communications department at Black and Veatch. Lea said the work was done to thank the Reading community for its support of Emporia Energy, Westar Energy’s new peaking power plant nearby. Lea said Westar provided materials and labor used on the concession stand and on the ball field. Black and Veatch also donated materials and labor.
“They really appreciated the support the community of Reading gave the Emporia Energy Project and wanted to give back to the community,” Lea said.
The two groups of company volunteers spent six weekends working on the project, Lea said. The concession stand was torn down and re-built, new sewer lines and connections were installed and several picnic tables were built and placed on new concrete pads.
Lea said the volunteers also wanted to thank the community for bringing them lunch at the ball field each day.
“They’ve been very appreciative of residents coming by,” she said.
