Allen’s Bob Lowder faces long recovery

Thursday, April 16, 2009

Bob Lowder of Allen is recovering from surgery at Stormont-Vail Health Care, as family, friends and neighbors are organizing fundraising events to help pay for expenses resulting from a serious health issue that surfaced in March.

Lowder and his wife, Charolette, own the Main Street Pub in Allen; he also works at Harveyville Seed Company.

He underwent emergency heart surgery on March 26, after being hospitalized on March 24.

On Friday, after an allergic reaction to a blood thinner he was receiving, surgeons amputated portions of both of his legs.

“He’ll be looking at quite a bit of rehabilitation,” said Janet Bathurst, an organizer of the Bob Lowder Benefit Dinner planned on Sunday. “But he is healing and preparing to come home.”

The Lowder home will need to be made wheelchair-accessible, she added.

A dinner on Sunday will be from 5 to 8 p.m. in the North Lyon County Community Center in Allen and will include spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, beverage and dessert. It is being sponsored through the Tri-Parish United Methodist Church communities of Allen, Admire and Miller. The event will include a silent auction with homemade items, donated services, veterinarian supplies and a Kansas City Chiefs lamp.

Raffle tickets will be available at a suggested donation of $10 per ticket for a Cutter Collection saddle that will be won on Sunday. An ongoing raffle for a 47-inch flatscreen TV, also for a suggested $10 per-ticket donation, will end when it is given away on June 20.

Tickets are available at Jim’s Cowboy Shop, Emporia Livestock Sales and East Emporia Veterinary Clinic in Emporia and at Main Street Pub and Grill, Allen Meat Processing and S&A Telephone in Allen; Harveyville Seed Company and Miller Elevator.

“If they want to make a tax-deductible donation on (Sunday) night, they can run that through the Allen United Methodist Church,” Bathurst said.

A non-tax deductible fund has been set up at ESB Financial. Donations may be sent to: Bob Lowder Benefit Fund, ESB Financial, Attn: Brenda, P.O. Box 807, Emporia KS 66801.

Charolette Lowder’s sister, Keianna Thompson, is running the restaurant while the Lowders are in Topeka. She has the pub open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

The Resource Center for Independent Living, Inc. has a great program called Build A Ramp that might be able to help out with Mr. Lowder's ramp needs. To get an application call 785-528-3105.

I don't want to discourage anyone from donating to such a worthwhile cause, however, I question the legality of making those contributions through another organization (Methodist church) for a tax deduction.
