Probation in thefts

Thursday, July 2, 2009

Jill Megredy, a former registrar at Emporia State University, was sentenced Friday in Lyon County District Court for two counts theft of property less than $1,000 in value. The court sentenced her to two consecutive 6-month jail sentences and placed her on 12 months of Court Services probation.

Megredy, 46, was charged Dec. 29 with four counts of theft from Beta Sigma Phi social sorority. Two of the charges were for felonies, involving amounts between $1,000 and $25,000; the remaining two charges were misdemeanors, for thefts under $1,000.

On May 15, she pleaded no contest to the two lesser counts. The two felony counts were dismissed as part of a plea bargain for her pleading no contest.

Megredy’s attorney, Rod Symmonds, told Chief Judge Merlin Wheeler that Megredy plans to reimburse the victim of the thefts in the original charges.

I'm unclear is she going to jail for her crimes or does she get probation?

Jail time appears to have been suspended and she was placed on probation. If she doesn't comply with terms of probation she could serve the designated time of 2 consecutive six month jail sentences.

I guess the lesson here is if you do a felony, do misdemeanors too so you can plea down and get a slap on the wrist.

msw2003, thanks for the clarification. madpoet - funny, but oh how truthful.

How much did she steal? Exactly what is her connection to this sorority?

Kinda heartless, aren't you Crack? Do you have any actual knowledge, or you just spouting off?

I thought it was funny.

Me too. Almost blew lemonade out my nose when I read it.

Why does the Gazette keep touting the Emporia State/registrar angle? What has that got to do with this case? Why hasn't she made restitution?

It's sad, Crack, to think I sided with you on the smoking ban, but now I find your humor at the expense of others rather revolting. I know you won't stop, but next time remember this: someday, when you are in a rather public and difficult situation, the jokes will be on you.
