Hartford hires new football, girls basketball coaches

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

Hartford has hired new head coaches for football and girls basketball.

The Southern Lyon County school board approved the hires of Patrick Gardner as the Jaguars’ new football coach and Megan McGuire as the new girls basketball coach at its meeting on Monday night, Hartford principal Curtis Simons said.

“They’re young and energetic,” Simons said. “They’re both very good motivators. They’re good role models, that’s important... and the kids look up to ’em.”

Gardner has been the head coach at Neosho Rapids Junior High for two years and served as an assistant for two years before that. He replaces Dave Wasylk, who was fired in April after two years as the head coach. The Jaguars finished 2-6 in 2007-08 and 3-6 this past season.

“Probably the only thing I really want to (say is) that we just needed to go in another direction,” Simons said.

McGuire has been the head coach at Neosho Rapids Junior High for the past two years. She played at Fort Hays State under her maiden name, Megan Williams.

“She did a great job with our junior high program,” Simons said.

McGuire will replace Tammy Windle, who Simons said resigned for family reasons. Windle will remain the cross country and track coach at Hartford. She spent two years as the head basketball coach, finishing 6-16 in 2007 and 7-13 this season.

“Coaching three seasons (with) a young family, that’s tough to do,” Simons said. “But she resigned on her own accord.”

Keplar, Council Grove win Flint Hills titles

Council Grove’s Tyler Keplar won the individual Flint Hills League championship at the league golf tournament on Monday at Emporia Municipal Golf Course, and the Braves won the team title by 13 strokes over Osage City.

Keplar shot a 75, beating teammate Scott Heilman by eight strokes. As a team, the Braves shot a 343. Viktor Massie also placed in the top 10 for Council Grove, finishing in a tie for ninth with a 91. Neal Adams finished 14th, Colby Horton 18th and Cass Nelson 21st.

Osage’s Derek Micheal finished third, shooting an 85, and teammates Lance Williamson and Landon Heward also cracked the top 10. Williamson shot an 88 to finish in a fourth-place tie, and Heward finished tied for sixth with a 90. Nathan Johnson and Mitch Martin and Mitch Martin finished tied for 12th for the Indians, and Kyle Branine ended the day in 24th.

Northern Heights finished sixth out of the six competing teams, shooting a 521. The Wildcats’ top finisher was John Bell, who placed 25th. Dan Gibson was right behind him in 26th, Brennan Davis and Nick Jenkins placed 29th and 30th, respectively, and Colby Hayes came in 33rd.

Braves beat Abilene

to finish regular season

Council Grove’s baseball team finished the regular season with a pair of easy home wins over Abilene on Monday.

A 10-run fourth inning ended Game One by run rule with the Braves ahead 18-3. Wes Roddy and Broc Finch both had three hits, including a double, and Roddy had four RBIs. Travis LeMay was 2-for-3 with another double and also drove home four runs. Finch and Scott Bowles drove in two runs apiece. T.J. Segebart gave up four hits and one earned run on the mound for the Braves, striking out two and walking two.

Sean Carr pitched a one-hitter in Game Two to lead Council Grove to a 7-1 win. Carr struck out five and walked just one, and Abilene’s only run was unearned. Dusty Maas hit a home run in the fourth inning to give Council Grove a 4-1 lead, and the Braves got two more in the fifth when LeMay and Finch each doubled and scored.

The sweep was a positive end to the season after the Braves dropped their final two Flint Hills League contests of the year last Friday, losing a pair of one-run games at West Franklin. The Falcons took the first game 7-6 and won the second game in a 17-16 slugfest.

Council Grove ended its season at 13-7 overall and 10-4 in the FHL. The Braves will be hosting a Class 3A regional beginning next Monday. Also in the regional will be Northern Heights, Mission Valley, Riley County, Rossville, Silver Lake and Rock Creek.

“Our regional is probably the toughest in all of 3A,” Council Grove coach Joe Buchanan said, “but we are looking forward to it.”

Bulldog softball team splits with Herington

Chase County’s softball team split a doubleheader with Herington last week.

The Bulldogs scored two runs in the seventh inning of last Thursday’s first game to pull within one run, but came up short in a 3-2 loss. Heather Duncan had two of Chase County’s five hits, including a double, and drove in a run for the Bulldogs. Taylor Rains pitched all six innings for CCHS, giving up two earned runs and eight hits while walking two and striking out six.

Briana Talkington pitched a shutout for Chase County in a 4-0 Game Two win. Talkington kept the defense busy, as she gave up just three hits without striking out a batter. Chase County supported her offensively with a run in the second, two in the fourth and one in the sixth. Duncan added another double and a single and drove in two runs. Kelly Hannigan added a double and an RBI, and Kylee Scott drove in another run.
