For Larry and Regina Falcetto, life with their infant granddaughter has been an adjustment but they’re not taking care of their granddaughter because her parents aren’t in the picture — but because both her parents are serving in Iraq.
Lily Falcetto, 10 months, has been living with her grandparents since mid-summer. Her father, Nick Falcetto, deployed in January and came back for a visit on Memorial Day and then returned overseas. Her mother left around the end of June. Both are stationed in Texas. Nick Falcetto is serving at Camp Victory as a company commander in Baghdad and Jennifer Falcetto is serving at Camp Taji as an Apache pilot and a Platoon Leader in an Attack Reconaissance Battalion.
“I fly 4-5 hour missions every day in support of ground elements that need overwatch for their missions,” Jennifer Falcetto said in an e-mail interview. “Our battalion runs continous 24 hour operations. Our aircraft have sensors that can see what they are doing from over 5 KM away so we can help give the ground elements situational awareness of what the enemy is doing 360 degrees around them.”
Both are serving in the Army. The two occasionally get to see each other, Regina Falcetto said. Nick Falcetto’s unit should be back in February and Jennifer Falcetto’s unit should be back the first part of April. Jennifer Falcetto said she and her husband get to talk on the telephone often since they are stationed in the same general area.
