September a good month for county finances

Friday, October 9, 2009

County commissioners received a positive September financial report during Thursday’s action session.

Bobbie Agler and Christie Miller of A&M Consultants gave the financial report during the beginning of the commission’s action session.

“Bottom line, September was a pretty decent month,” Agler told commissioners.

Agler said the county has $11,700,000 in unencumbered funds, which is up from a year ago. That number is after accrued payroll and accrued employee benefits.

Agler brought up a few concerns with budgets, including the county’s Road and Bridge fund. County Controller Dan Slater said most of the major expenditures are over, however.

“We’re hoping those last two months are going to be blizzard-free and we’re hoping we won’t be spending on commodities,” Slater said. “But a couple of blizzards and all bets are off.”

Agler said on balance, the general fund by itself, with the exception of a few departments, is looking good.

“Unless something unforeseen happens in the next three months it appears that we should end up at least as good as the estimate was and potentially better,” Agler said.

Agler added that overtime compared to past years is still positive.

“We’re running $94,000 to the good,” he said. “We had a budget of $288,000 and up through the year to date we’re only at $194,000. If the weather holds, it could be nearly $100,000 under budget.”

In other business commissioners approved:

• Sending out requests for proposals for complete signs, sign faces and black numbers to vendors. Item placed on consent agenda.

• The best bid of KansasLand Tire for 24 Goodyear tires for dump trucks at $280.25 each for a total of $6,726. Item placed on consent agenda.
