Friday Thoughts is a light-hearted commentary.
Halloween is tomorrow, and this year I was a little nervous that city leaders might ban trick or treating in Emporia.
Recently I was questioning a city official about the ridiculous rule that prohibits candy to be thrown from floats during the Christmas parade. The elected official was not sure but thought that it might be prohibited because of the city’s liability policy.
If holding up your hand to catch candy is dangerous, just wait until the city’s liability insurance people watch our community on Halloween night. Dark streets crammed with cars and kids darting in and out of traffic as they run from house to house, I assume, would be a liability person’s nightmare. I am going to go out on a limb and say trick or treating is more dangerous than catching candy at a parade.
But fortunately the city has not banned Halloween and the city will allow trick or treating. Stay safe tomorrow night, watch for cars and save some candy for my three little ghosts and goblins.

Chris,
I was wondering what was the deal with throwing candy in a parade. That was the single most important part of a parade when I was a kid and my kids thought the same thing. They stopped liking parades some time ago and I suspect that had something to do with it. I hate to say this for fear of what it may start, but it seems like the fun is being zapped out of everything these days around here.
