Brandy Nance covers the police, courts, county and health beats.
Brandy is an Ichabod in the middle of Hornet country. She graduated from Washburn University in Topeka in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in mass media with a print journalism emphasis. Brandy holds an associates degree from Butler Community College in child development. Her love for the news led her from a career as a child care center teacher and director to a career in newspaper journalism.
Transplanted from Wichita, Brandy moved to Emporia in 2000 while finishing up her journalism degree at Washburn. She worked days at Emporia Child Care Center and attended Washburn at night. After completing her degree, Brandy worked at The Topeka Capital-Journal as a reporter while commuting back and forth from Emporia. Brandy’s desire was to become an active part of Emporia, a community she has grown to love. This led her to come to work for The Emporia Gazette in September 2005.
Brandy loves animals and lives just outside Emporia, where she can have lots of them. She has five dogs — a teacup poodle, Mayiah; two shih tzus, Chewie and P.J.; and two mixed-breed dogs, Jade and Mickey. She also owns three large tortoises.
Brandy loves birdwatching, reading and writing. She lives for her television shows, “Law and Order: SVU,” “CSI,” “Medium” and “The 4400.” In her ‘spare time’ — and enough people to animal-sit — she loves to travel, with her favorite place being Estes Park, Colo., where she hopes to retire someday. Brandy also enjoys spending time with her nephew, Zerrick and her niece, Mazie, who live in Wichita, along with Brandy’s mother, Pat; father, Charlie; brother, Dalton; and sister-in-law, Amanda.
