Pat Kelley should have helped edit this one, he sure has left a void. When I see Emerson Lynn editorials, I feel right at home, as if I were in Iola, Kansas, not Emporia.

In your article you include:
Who: Gazette
What: Color, definition and layoffs
Where: "another paper with state-of-the-art facilities" Is that to mean the Lawrence paper? As they say in real estate location is everything. The general public would like to see it in print, rather to hear the news on the street, the Lawrence World will print our paper.
When: 9/1
Why: More cost effective

Your equipment is not Gutenberg, Franklin or even Platen from the 1930's and 1940's. Equipment from 1974 would be 35 years old and could have had upgrades thru the years. A little here, a little there, wouldn't have been so expensive. This is Emporia Kansas, we really do NOT need a lot of bells and whistles. A new inserter machine would of been nice. Perhaps now I will get a Walgreens' circular weekly.

I guess I missed the point about the Abundant Harvest meals, I didn't realize the cross section of our city ate at the soup kitchen. A blessing to the homeless and indigent, I was surprised they have money for television and subscriptions.
Hopefully the general public of Emporia will never have to go to a soup kitchen to sustain themselves. Abundant Harvest will never serve sparrow, rabbit or crow like the folks of the Great Depression were forced to eat. I understand rabbit was prepared unlike Wednesdays' recipe, more like with salt, pepper, flour or lard, if folks had the ingredients.

Speak with some elderly residents in the area. They can tell you about the Great Depression and the paper eras of W.A.W. and W.L.W.

Change can be nice, but consistency can't be beat.
I have a feeling those "three valuable employees" will be dearly missed. How many times thru the years did they give up their personal lives' activities to work on the presses when something went wrong?
Team work by them, so the show could go on. Many years of dedication...were they offered other positions?

Best Wishes Karen! The Bennetts are such nice folks, I wish everyone appreciated their hard working, long time employees. I was not at all surprised by their acts of kindness.

Perhaps folks knew Dr. Coldsmith from church, the office or thru his writing. He will be greatly missed by the many he influenced. Emporia lost a gem... that we were so blessed to have known.

I was shocked and saddened to read the news. Mr. Clemons was always in the Gazette for sports activities in the late 1990's. I finally met him in the summer of '99 when he worked with my child for an activity at Peter Pan Park. I was very impressed and thought he would make a wonderful educator. When the original photo ran in October, 1999, I thought he must be a great father too. We saved the clipping for a while, on the front of the refrigerator. In a college town so many folks come and go, this is such sad news for an ESU alum. It was well written by our own Emporian, Sara Shepherd. Does anyone know if Gerard became a teacher?

Neat books for kids, in tough economic times. Libraries have a wealth of information for all ages of folks.

Am I the only one confused as to why the Kent Fence Company can not continue to operate? Surely there is a valued employee or foreman that knows the ropes. Eventually Mr. Kent will return, Beau will not. Beau was born three days before my child, they were friends in high school and college. Many folks on both sides are hurt by this tragic event.

Kansasgirl,
I do not know you and vice versa. I meant that last comment in the nicest way. I was raised "if you have something nice to say, fine-otherwise keep your opinion to yourself." I have commented on this website less than ten times in the entire time the paper has had this feature, all good comments I might add. Belittling someone because you can be anonymous is quite childish. I won't even step that low, I have very high standards. Since you brought up the budget meeting...some of us were there or saw it on Channel 8. I hope you were able to be a part of the meeting.
Back to Dennis Delmott, our "man of the hour," I sincerely think Employee of the Quarter, Year, would be really nice. We have many, many good people in our community to be proud of... next time you see them, thank them. To operate a city takes a lot of money, this wouldn't take a lot of fanfare, time or money. On Shooting victim in critical condition

Detective Delmott arrested the escaped convict at 2:40. Later in the evening he had to work this case. I hope they didn't expect him to be a storm spotter too at 4:30. Thanks again and keep up the good work. Perhaps he should be considered for "Employee of the Year"...if the city could afford such recognition.
